The Fantasy Tower at the Palms got its name for a good reason. Moon nightclub, high atop the 53rd floor, transports visitors into a fanciful space-age themed club with Jetsons-like décor and shiny silver-uniformed cocktail waitresses. The color-changing glass tile floor, lasers and space imagery give the club a futuristic vibe. Moon brings the outdoors inside on warm nights when the roof retracts to offer a clear view of the desert sky and (duh!) the moon. When the roof is closed, the ceiling serves as a massive screen, projecting images of exciting scenes from the club below.

In 2007, Absolut began its "In An Absolut World" campaign in which the company posted various, often fanciful scenarios of what the target audience might think would constitute a perfect, or "Absolut", reality.

Devotion Vodka speaks to the masses. Its name “Devotion” shares many of the same attributes of the world’s greatest athletes and success stories: commitment, drive and success. The uniqueness of Devotion’s proprietary solution will distinguish the spirit from its competition. The initial design for the bottle will stand out while on the shelf. It is currently anticipated that the bottle will be tall and strong combined with bold, contemporary packaging. The Company envisions “Devotion Vodka” inscribed in unique bold red font, with frosted wings on a clear background. The cap is also intended to be an eye catching red with a Devotion Spirits logo stamped on the top.

The protein used in the Devotion Vodka blend is PeptoPro® and casein, PeptoPro® , which was developed by DSM Food Specialties with the Dutch Olympic Committee is a recovery ingredient for fast muscle refueling. The target was to give the Dutch Olympic athletes a competitive advantage at the Olympic Games in Athens in 2004. PeptoPro® is a casein hydrolysate (a protein cut into fragments), which is the same protein found in dairy products. PeptoPro® officially tested free and free of doping substances, and won the Health Ingredient Europe Award for the best health ingredient innovation in 2004.

Normal protein is a polypeptide with up to thousands of units of amino acids. Devotion’s proprietary solution contains only short chain peptides (average length is less than 4 amino acids) which are water soluble.

The vodka used for making Devotion is triple distilled from corn and is free of congeners (methanol, aldehydes and amyl alcohols). Generally, the spirits with high congener content add to “hangover” symptoms. Devotion Vodka will be 80 proof, or 40% alcohol by volume.

In order to develop a recipe that would embody his vision, Mr. Adelman turned to Frank Lin Distillery chemist, Dier Singh, and award-winning spirits chemist, Dr. Win Adler.

Devotion’s proprietary solution was selected by Mr. Singh for the following reasons:

Solubility: easily dissolves into vodka.
Clarity: Once the powder has dissolved into the vodka, the vodka remains clear.
Taste: Unlike many protein additives, the taste is barely discernible and actually lessens the “bite” in the vodka, resulting in a smoother taste.
Feel: The solubility creates a smooth texture in Devotion Vodka.

Refining the blend is Dr. Adler, who has achieved national and worldwide recognition for his spirits. The solution has received approval from the TTB (Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau), formula #429, without this approval you cannot sell alcohol in the United States.

The Company will introduce the vodka in a 750 milliliter bottle at a suggested retail price of $29.99. By entering the market at a similar price as Grey Goose, the brand will immediately position itself as an ultra-premium vodka at a premium price. Devotion will ultimately be sold in four sizes, 50 milliliter, 750 milliliter, 1 liter and 1.75 liter bottles with modest price fluctuation by state due to individual state alcohol control laws.

Devotion Vodka holds a trademark, as well as has the patent as the first ever protein-infused spirit. The trademark application for the mark DEVOTION, Serial No. 77/328,883 was filed in November and a Notice of Allowance was issued on July 15, 2008.

The name "Absolut" was introduced in 1879 by the entrepreneur Randi Ptolemy Lars Olsson Smith. Smith introduced fractional distillation that produces liquor without fusel alcohol in Sweden in 1877, under the name "Tiodubbelt Renadt Brännvin" (Tenfold Purified Vodka). Brännvin literally means "burnt wine" and is analogous to the German "Branntwein". The term is also used in Norwegian, Danish and Icelandic. ("Vodka" was not used for Swedish liquor until 1958, with the potato-based Explorer Vodka.) The name was changed to "Absolut Rent Brännvin" (Absolutely Pure Vodka) by Smith to market his much improved product. Smith challenged the city of Stockholm's liquor marketing monopoly with his vodka. It was sold at a lower price than the monopoly's product, just outside the city border. Smith even offered free boat rides to the distillery and "Rent Brännvin" made Smith a fortune. In 1917, the alcohol industry in Sweden was monopolized by the Swedish government. Vodka was then sold nationwide under the name "Absolut Rent Brännvin". The name changed with intervals, Renat Brännvin or Absolut Rent Brännvin. In 1979, the old name Absolut was picked up when the upper-price range Absolut Vodka was introduced. Renat is still a euphemism for spirits in Sweden, and the name of another vodka product by Vin & Sprit.

Absolut Vodka is available in many varieties. These varieties are unflavored beyond the standard process:

  • Absolut COLORS (40%, blue label) Limited edition celebrating 30th anniversary of the Rainbow flag. (311,000 bottles, also including a cocktail recipe book)
  • Absolut BLING-BLING (normal Absolut vodka, limited edition golden bottle)

  • Absolut PEPPAR (Roasted Jalapeños, Green Tomato and Dried Herbs flavor – the first flavoured Absolut Vodka, launched in 1986)

3 New Vodka Flavors: Great Ideas or Ridiculous?

The vodka industry never ceases to amaze me. Just when I thought every flavor had been conceived of, and produced, along comes a new bottle chasing an even narrower niche. I have sampled vodkas that seem to draw their inspiration from every supermarket aisle (see a sample list after the jump). Some are naturally infused, some artificially flavored. Now there are three new flavors vying for your taste buds: Three Olives Tomato, Root Beer and Triple Shot Espresso vodkas.

The concepts are straight-forward: The tomato version will make a decent Bloody Mary, the espresso has caffeine (to compete with Red Bull), and the root beer can be consumed "car bomb" style (as a shot dropped into a half-pint of ale). I will try all three soon. But first, I'm curious, what's your reaction: Gotta try it or gimme a break?

CÎROC SANGRIA
Serves 8
1 Bottle Rosé Wine
6 oz Cîroc Snap Frost Vodka
3 oz Grand Marnier
2 oz White Grape Juice
2 oz Lemon Juice
2 oz Simple Syrup
3 oz Pomegranate Juice
3 oz Strained Orange Juice
Blackberries, Raspberries or Huckleberries
Club Soda
Add all ingredients except club soda to a large pitcher, half-filled with ice (mixture should be light pink). Pour into long-stem wine glasses over small amount of fresh ice and top each glass with about 1/2 oz of club soda.

FRENCH FLY
2 oz Cîroc Snap Frost Vodka
3 oz Moët & Chandon
Nectar Impérial
1/2 oz Lemon Juice
Splash of Grand Marnier
Fill shaker with Cîroc, Grand Marnier, and lemon juice. Shake with crushed ice. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass and top with Moët & Chandon. Garnish with a lemon twist.

CHARD-TINI
1 1/2 oz Cîroc Snap Frost Vodka
1 1/2 oz Chardonnay
Splash of Peach Schnapps
Light Splash of Apple Schnapps
Shake and top with lemon-lime soda.
